Day of the Midwives

In Rus', on this day they celebrated a woman's holiday, or a holiday of porridge. On this day, midwives and women in labor were glorified. Women took their children and went with gifts and congratulations to the midwives, who helped them during childbirth. They, in turn, treated the guests to porridge. At the same time, a custom associated with Christianity was born: women came to church with pre-baked pies to present them to the Mother of God.

In general, the midwife in any village was highly respected. She was called a midwife because she knew how to properly “bundle” a newborn with diapers so that he would not struggle and sleep peacefully. Midwives were experts in women's and maternal care. No wonder they said: “Grandma will help the whole business.” Their skill was also noted: “Every grandmother has her own tricks.”

There is another saying about the holiday: “On the holiday of porridge, everyone walks around with a spoon – a full ladle will not disperse a family.” This meant that the customs of this day were aimed at strengthening the family.

Babi's porridges are also marked with their own signs. If titmice scream in the morning, it means there will be frost in the evening; but if the crows are making noise, there will be snowfalls and blizzards. Heavy snow was also foreshadowed by the porridge browning in the oven. It was believed that clear weather on this day promised a good harvest of millet.

It was from this day that girls' fortune telling began, which continued until Epiphany. It was customary to tell fortunes accompanied by special songs or in complete silence. The main subjects of fortune telling were weddings, death and harvest. Over time, the ritual essence of fortune telling was practically lost, and its entertainment side came first. Nowadays, many girls also enjoy telling fortunes “for their betrothed.”
