According to the sources cited by Agerpres, for the management positions of the two special services there are currently “four to five” variants under discussion.
The sources claim that among the people considered are both professionals in the system and political figures.
The President of Romania, Nicușor Dan, stated as early as September 2025 that he has a “short list” of candidates for the leadership of the intelligence services, but emphasized that the subject is being discussed discreetly, together with the leaders of the political parties.
“It's a discussion with the leaders of the parties, that's what I can tell you. It's a serious discussion. Precisely because of the trust I have in them, I don't want to damage it by statements I make in the public space.” declared the head of state in a televised broadcast.
Nicușor Dan reiterated on several occasions that the negotiations regarding the management of SRI and SIE are ongoing “in a limited setting”.
“Romania needs stability”
The president also emphasized that the appointment process must take place without public confrontations between the institutions.
“Romania needs stability, we are not in a situation where we can make a game out of this: I somehow propose, the Parliament rejects, I accuse the Parliament, they accuse me. This will definitely not happen”. stated Nicușor Dan, in a statement given to Antena 1.
Asked what kind of people the future intelligence chiefs would be, the president said he wanted people with solid experience and coordination skills.
“Some people who have life experience, who are able to coordinate many people and who have a political ability to move between many interests, many legitimate”, said the head of state.
