Folk calendar

Nochevnik, or Christmas Eve.

January 6 is the “evening” of the Nativity of Christ. The eve of the holiday is colloquially called Christmas Eve, or Sochevnik. This name comes from a special dish made from wheat, nuts and honey – sochiva.

The tradition of eating this dish on the eve of Christmas was born in memory of Daniel and the three youths, who, according to the Gospel, “fed from the seeds of the earth, so as not to be defiled by a pagan meal.” However, they started dinner only at night – with the rising of the first star; Until this moment it was necessary to fast.

Late in the evening the whole family gathered at the table – the “supper” began. Usually the feast took place in the parents' house. Festive clothes were prepared for Christmas Eve. It was believed that one should not celebrate Christmas in black. They also decorated the trees in the gardens – they tied the trunks with straw. They said that thanks to this they would grow better.

On Christmas Eve in Rus', the custom of caroling was observed. Guys and girls went from house to house, singing carols and begging the owners for food and money. The girls also wondered: where the dog barks from, from where the groom will send matchmakers. Another sign worked for everyone. It was believed that if you take a steam bath in a hot bath on this day, your health will increase a hundredfold.

There were many signs among the people on this day. For example, it was impossible to leave the house – otherwise the cattle would wander through the forests in the spring. They also said: to weave on a holy evening is to please misfortune.

The future harvest was judged by many signs. A clear day promised that both the vegetables in the garden and the wheat in the field would grow. The stars in the sky foreshadowed a large blueberry harvest, frost and deeply frozen ground – a bread harvest, black paths in the snow – a buckwheat harvest.

They said that if the Milky Way is full of stars, the weather will be sunny.
