How stability points increase your pension: what they are and who benefits from them in 2026

The new pension law brings additional benefits for those who have accumulated seniority and have constantly contributed to the public system, in the form of bonuses that influence the final value of the pension.

These financial bonuses are called stability points and are granted in the form of pension points to those who have exceeded the age of 25.
What are stability points and when are they awarded
Stability points are a bonus added to the calculation of the pension in Romania, granted for over 25 years of contributory contributions, to reward loyalty to the public system, with progressively increasing values. These are granted at retirement and added to the standard annual score (result from earnings) to increase the total pension, starting in 2024, according to the new Pensions Law.
In the case of people who have completed a contribution period of more than 25 years, a number of stability points are granted for the contribution period that exceeds this ceiling, as follows:
a) 0.50 points for each year achieved over 25 years up to 30 years inclusive, 0.04167 points for each month, respectively 0.00139 points for each day;
b) 0.75 points for each year achieved over 30 years up to and including 35 years, 0.06250 points for each month, respectively 0.00208 points for each day;
c) one point for each year achieved over 35 years, 0.08333 points for each month, respectively 0.00278 points for each day.
Starting from September 1, 2024, the formula for calculating the pension is VPR (value of the reference point set at 81 lei) x Total number of points. The setpoint value has not been updated since then.
How stability points change the value of the pension. Calculation examples
Considering that a pensioner has only worked for 27 years, i.e. only 2 years beyond the number from which the stability points are granted, it means that he will receive only 81 lei more after the recalculation, if all the other benefits that were taken into account when determining the amount of the pension will be kept.
If a pensioner has worked for 35 years and pension contributions have been paid for all of them, he will receive an additional 506 lei after the recalculation (2.5 points for the period of work between 25 and 30 years, plus 3.75 points for the period of work between 30 and 35 years, to be multiplied by 81 lei).
The most advantaged will be those who have worked more: a pensioner who has worked for over 45 years will receive 810 lei in addition to the one who has worked for 35 years, i.e. a pension increased by 1,316 lei from September 1.
From the data presented above by the Minister of Labor, it appears that almost 2 million pensioners have worked between 25 and 35 years, a little over 1 million have worked between 35 and 41 years, and several tens of thousands more have exceeded 45 years in the labor field.
