Before Maluk agreed to resign, there was a dispute with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. On Saturday, during a meeting with the country's leader, the head of the SBU refused to make a statement on this matter and the related transfer to the External Intelligence Service or the National Security Council. The refusal was related to a wave of support from social activists and representatives of the military.

“I met with Wasyl Maluk. I thanked him for his combat service and suggested that he focus on this area. We need more Ukrainian asymmetric operations against the occupier and the Russian state and better results in eliminating the enemy,” we read.
“This is where Vasyl is strongest and this is what he will continue to do in the Security Service of Ukraine. I have entrusted Vasyl Malyuk with the task of making our asymmetric operations the strongest in the world. The necessary resources and political support are assured. Together we also discussed potential candidates for the position of the new head of the Security Service of Ukraine. Glory to Ukraine!” – Zelensky further wrote.
After that, he posted a message about the next meeting.
“I met with Yevheny Khmara, head of the Special Operations Center “A” of the Security Service of Ukraine. I am grateful to Yevheniy and all our special operations soldiers for their exceptionally important combat actions throughout the years of full-scale war. Ukraine is achieving the necessary results in defense, and all our warriors who make this possible deserve the highest respect and gratitude. We will develop the experience of the Ukrainian special operations forces and COS “A” of the Security Service of Ukraine. Today, together with Yevheniyem We also discussed additional possibilities for the institutional development of the Security Service of Ukraine and special operations currently being prepared“, said the President of Ukraine.
