Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro is being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, New York, after being captured following US strikes in the country on Saturday. He will be tried for drug and weapons trafficking.
Television footage showed the Venezuelan leader getting off a plane under escort at an airport in upstate New York on Saturday afternoon, then arriving in Manhattan by helicopter. He was surrounded by dozens of DEA agents.
Later, the White House released a video of Maduro, handcuffed and wearing plastic slippers, as he is escorted by agents to the headquarters of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the federal anti-drug agency.
“Good evening, Happy Birthday”, the Venezuelan president is heard declaring.
Nicolas Maduro was then taken to the Brooklyn Center that has previously housed other high-profile inmates such as Ghislaine Maxwell, Sam Bankman Fried and P. Diddy awaiting trial.
Maduro and his wife will be brought before a judge in New York on a date yet to be determined. The Venezuelan president is accused of narco-terrorism, conspiracy to import cocaine and possession of firearms.
