Pfizer will purchase the Metsera biotechnology company for at least $ 4.9 billion, having access to its developmental treatments against obesity, the two US companies announced on Monday, France Prese and Agerpres reports.
Through this acquisition, Pfizer intends to expand his portfolio and earn a share of the gigantic market for obesity drugs, a sector currently in full expansion.
“Obesity is a vast and increasing domain, with over 200 associated health problems. The acquisition proposed by Metsera (…) Propulates Pfizer in this key therapeutic field,” said Pfizer, Albert Bourla, in the statement.
The transaction, which is expected to end the fourth quarter of 2025, includes Pfizer's acquisition of Metsera shares for $ 47.50 per action, a total of $ 4.9 billion.
The success of obesity and diabetes treatments – a market currently dominated by the Danish company Novo Nordisk, owner of Ozempic and Wegovy, and the American company Eli Lilly, owner Zepbound – has aroused the appetite of pharmaceutical companies, which intensifies its purchases in this sector.
On Thursday, for example, the Swiss pharmaceutical giant Roche purchased 89bio, a company based in California, specialized in liver and cardiometabolic diseases, a purchase of almost $ 3.5 billion.
In March 2025, the group also concluded a partnership with the Danish company Zealand Pharma to develop a treatment that acts on the hormone of satiety.
Pfizer was one of the first laboratories to market a mRNA vaccine against Covid-19, which increased revenues for several years.
