Airports across Greece suspended arrivals and departures on Sunday due to unspecified radio frequency problems, the country's Civil Aviation Authority said. The Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Greece announced that due to the failure, the airspace over the country was closed and the disruptions are expected to last until 16.

The authorities assured that they were investigating the cause of the failure. The problem seems to be related to the central radio frequency systems of the Athens and Macedonia Area Control Centers, which are subordinate to the Civil Aviation Authority, wrote the portal of the daily “Kathimerini”.

Radio frequencies in affected centers have been put out of use. The centers play a key role in Greece's air transport because planes entering the country's airspace must establish communication with them, the portal explained.

The technical failure affects all flights to and from Greece, although planes already in the air continue to operate normally. Flight monitoring websites showed Greek airspace largely empty.

State broadcaster ERT said arrivals and departures were suspended at 9 local time (8 a.m. in Poland). ERT added that flights are being redirected to neighboring countries.

The Polish embassy in this country commented on the failure in Greece. The facility informed on Sunday on website X that due to a failure of the control system, the airspace over Greece was closed and the disruptions were expected to last until 4 p.m. on Sunday. (PAP)
