The announcement was made by the Bulgarian Football Federation, stating that Dimitar Penev passed away after a long illness. The creator of the Golden Generation of the Bulgarians had three mandates (1989, 1991-1996 and 2007) at the national team of the neighboring country, but also at the club level, he trained CSKA Sofia and Spartak Varna, but also Al-Nassr or Liaoning.
For the Bulgarians, Dimitar Penev was not only great as a coach. As a player, he played for only two teams, Lokomotiv and CSKA Sofia, with the latter winning 7 championships and 5 cups. Previously, he had won a title with the rival from the capital of the country.
After the sad news was announced, Hristo Stoicikov, the greatest Bulgarian player of all time, posted a message on social media saying goodbye to his favorite coach: “Giant! The greatest! The patriarch of our football! The man who got us fourth in the world! The man who built us both as individuals and as athletes! Rest in peace, Senior! You will never be forgotten”.
