Several Russian missiles hit a multi-story building in Kharkiv, northeastern Ukraine, on Friday. In the attack, the building was completely destroyed and at least 25 people were injured, according to Ukrainian officials. However, Russia denies that it attacked the Ukrainian city, according to Reuters.
Photos and videos posted online showed smoke rising from an area of massive destruction as emergency crews made their way through rubble and large chunks of construction materials.
“Rocket strikes in the center of Kharkiv almost completely destroyed a five-story residential building,” regional governor Oleh Sîniehubov told Ukrainian television, adding that according to preliminary information, two ballistic missiles had hit the area, according to Reuters.
“Rescue teams are on the scene. The priority is to clear the rubble and search for people trapped under it,” he added.
25 injured
Sîniehubov said 25 people were injured, 16 of whom are hospitalized, including a woman in serious condition. He mentioned that, at the time of the explosion, there could have been customers in the commercial premises and in a cafe on the ground floor of the building.
Mayor Ihor Terehov indicated a balance of 30 injured.
Located 30 km from the border, Kharkiv resisted the Russian offensive in the first weeks of the Russian invasion in February 2022. As Russian forces have since focused on capturing the eastern regions of the country, the city has been the constant target of airstrikes, according to News.ro.
