“There are tremors, calm down,” the president said before leaving the podium. The conference at the National Palace was interrupted and the head of state and journalists were evacuated. The briefing was later resumed.
The epicenter of the 6.5-magnitude quake was near the city of San Marcos in Guerrero state in the southwest of the country, local media reported.
In Guerrero, a 50-year-old woman died under the rubble of the building where she lived. Landslides were reported on highways, gas leaks and damage to residential buildings and numerous hospitals.
The man died after falling down the stairs
Mexico City authorities announced the death of a 67-year-old man who fell down the stairs while trying to escape from the building. 12 people in the city were injured. There was information about fallen power poles and trees as well as power outages.
As a result of the shock, the Independence Monument, a golden angel on a 45-meter column, which is one of the landmarks of the capital of Mexico, leaned left and right, which was immortalized in recordings later broadcast by local television.
Mexico's seismological office said it had recorded 420 aftershocks by noon local time on Friday, the strongest of which had a magnitude of 4.7.
