The promotion of Csikszereda in the Super League has reached the short list of the most important sporting achievements of Hungary in 2025. The club's stop from Miercurea Ciuc, with a strong Hungarian identity, was included among the ten most important candidate sequences for the title of “Sporting Moment of the Year”, at the National Sports Gala in Budapest, scheduled for January 12.

FK Csikszereda mathematically promoted to the Romanian Super League for the first time in the club's history after the draw between CSM Reșița and Metaloglobus, from Liga 2 2024-2025, securing their place in the first echelon with four stages before the end of the play-offs. The club and its academy are part of a large project, supported by partnership with Puskas Akademia FC and external funding since 2013-2014, to improve its infrastructure and youth programs.

Csikszereda, financed from Budapest

The football club from Miercurea Ciuc has received huge sums of money from the Hungarian Government, led by Viktor Orban, in recent years. In the fall of 2018, in an official response to Gazeta Sporturilor, the Budapest executive revealed that it had awarded the Csikszereda and Sepsi teams no less than 1 billion forints, around 3.2 million euros.

Funding continued afterwards, the sums from Hungary being used for the development of the infrastructure, but also of the centers and academies for children and juniors.

In 2025, the investments of the Hungarian Government for Sepsi and Csikszereda clubs were estimated at around 40 million euros.

How Csikszereda was born

The history of football in Miercurea Ciuc dates back to 1904, with written evidence from the “Csikszereda” newspaper, dated June 25, 1904, that “On Sunday, the 19th of this month, the Miercurea Ciuc football club was established in our town amid great interest”. In the beginning, the sport was practiced at the amateur level, without great results.

In 1919 they changed their name to Csikszereda Physical Education Association, in 1943-44 they debuted in the third line of the Hungarian National Championship, then in 1944-45 in the Second National Championship.

  • Since the Second World War, Csikszereda has not played in the Hungarian league, and after that, during communism, it played only in the lower leagues.

  • Until 1971, he played in Division D, then continued for five years in C under the name of AS Miercurea Ciuc.

  • Since then, the name of the football team from Miercurea Ciuc took the name of the sponsor, so for two seasons it operated as IUPS (Equipment and Parts Company). Later, it bore the name Tractorul between 1978 and 1987.

Csikszereda, in the 80s

Csikszereda played in the third tier for five seasons, finishing 7th in 1978–79, 14th in 1979–80, 6th in 1980–81, 7th in 1981–82 and 16th in 1982–83. After five years, in 1988, it promoted again to Division C, but under the name Rapid. In that season, the formation from Miercurea Ciuc finished in third place, so for the first time since the start it was close to acceding to B. A season later, it was relegated again.

In the 2014–15 season, the team finished in 6th place, in 2015–16, in 5th place, in 2016–17, in third place, in 2017–18, in second place, this being their best ever run to that point, being promoted to League 2 for the first time in 115 years.
