As the consumer federation explains, In laboratory tests carried out on behalf of the organization in more than half of the randomly selected clothes, shoes and accessories offered on these platforms, the presence of heavy metals has been demonstrated such as chrome, nickel, lead or cobalt at concentrations that may be harmful to consumers' health.
Research was conducted in the Laboratory of Fertilizers and Chemical Products in Poland, which belongs to the Polish Center for Research and Certification. A total of 29 products offered on popular Asian sales platforms were tested. The products were chosen by the Consumer Federation and in the autumn of 2024. She bought them in a random way: in total it was 16 pieces of clothes and underwear (including swimwear and hat), 6 pairs of footwear, 5 jewelry pieces, 1 female evening bag and 1 charger.

The study revealed that more than half (57.6 percent) of the tested products contained dangerous heavy metals. “In 10 out of 16 studies of clothes and underwear, chromium, lead nickel, cobalt or antimony were found at concentrations exceeding the permissible limits. Ornaments turned out to be particularly dangerous for health: artificial stones, chains, metal buckles and buckles. Jewelry, footwear and handbag also contained elevated levels of cobalt, nickel, chrome and lead ” – explains the consumer federation in the press release.

The disturbing findings that appeared in the Federation report were commented by Jacek Finster, head of the fertilizer and chemical laboratory at the Polish Research and Certification Center. He explained that Goods bought for the needs of the research experiment are in contact with the body. Heavy metals present in them can lead to allergic reactions.
After the report by the Consumers Federation, FIrma Shein made a statementin which she assured that “she treats all allegations regarding incompatibility with the highest attention.” The Chinese sales platform added that all suppliers “are obliged to comply with strict security control principles and politicians in accordance with European and international standards.”
