Uganda's 2025 Africa Cup of Nations campaign ended in disappointment after a 3-1 defeat by Nigeria, while Tanzania advanced to the last 16 for the first time in its history.

Uganda's national team went into their final group stage match on Tuesday needing a win to keep their hopes of qualification alive after a defeat to Tunisia and a draw with Tanzania in their opening games.

However, their hopes were quickly dashed in a dramatic clash with Nigeria. FCSB player Baba Alhassan played 59 minutes in this game.

Nigeria opened the scoring after 28 minutes when Paul Onuachu converted a back pass from Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, who had expertly beaten goalkeeper Denis Onyango. Onyango, who had suffered an ankle injury just moments before the goal, continued to play until the break.

Dramatic scenes in Uganda – Nigeria: Baba Alhassan's formation used three goalkeepers!

Things got worse for Uganda after the break. Salim Magoola, who replaced Onyango, was sent off just 11 minutes after the restart. The substitute keeper received a straight red card for touching the ball outside his box, trying to stop a counter attack led by Victor Osimhen.

Coach Paul Put introduced third goalkeeper Nafian Alionzi and was forced to sacrifice Baba Alhassan. His first action was to clear the ball from his own goal as Raphael Onyedika doubled Nigeria's lead in the 62nd minute, finishing off a team move initiated by Samuel Chukwueze.

Just five minutes later, the same pair combined again with Onyedika scoring his second goal of the match to make it 3-0. Uganda managed a late consolation goal when Rogers Mato scored from an Allan Okello pass with 15 minutes remaining, but it was not enough to prevent elimination. Uganda finished last in Group C with just one point.

Tanzania made history: qualified for the round of 16 of the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time

In the other group game, Tanzania secured a historic place in the knockout stages by drawing 1-1 with Tunisia. Tanzania took the lead after a penalty converted by Ismael Gharbi towards the end of the first half, but responded just three minutes after the restart with Feisal Salum's equaliser.

Tanzania held on for the point that saw them qualify as one of the best third-placed teams, beating Angola on goal difference. Nigeria finished top of the group with 9 points while Tunisia finished second.

  • Having never previously qualified from the group stage, Tanzania's reward for this historic achievement is a formidable round of 16 clash against tournament hosts and favourites, Morocco.
