The crew of an oil tanker hijacked off the coast of Equatorial Guinea has been released

The attack on the Danish LPG tanker CGAS Saturn occurred on December 3, approximately 50 nautical miles west of Mbini, a coastal town in Equatorial Guinea. Its owner, Christiania Gas, a Danish gas trading company, announced at the time that the people had been kidnapped nine crew members. Four remained on board: the second captain, the third captain, the deck officer and one sailor.

Before the pirates kidnapped the sailors, they robbed them of their personal belongings. The Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs responded to the incident by informing that a special team had been established to deal with the matter.

The Gulf of Guinea belongs to the most dangerous waters in the world, precisely because of maritime piracy. According to the International Maritime Bureau's Piracy Reporting Center, the region recorded 15 pirate attacks in the first nine months of 2025. During this time, maritime bandits kidnapped 14 crew members.

One of the most recent incidents was attempted hijacking of an oil tanker anchored off the coast of Liberia in October. Two armed men boarded, but the crew raised the alarm, forcing the pirates to flee with their looted food supplies.
