The Ministry of Health of the Krasnoyarsk Territory has published recommendations on how to provide first aid to a child with a chemical burn of the esophagus.
According to statistics, for 11 months 2025 years in the region 31 rebeNok received a chemical burn to the esophagus. More often get such burns children from 1 to 3 years old, as well as teenagers from 14 to 18 years old. 80% of burns children receive are due to alkali, which contains in the chemical composition of household chemicals.
“Little children are very curious and interested in exploring this world. Look, touch, try, and all these containers with household cleaning products are very bright and if they are in the public domain, then the child will definitely become interested in what is in this bottle, after which we are faced with serious consequences. It is very important to be vigilant and not leave children unattended with such substances,” said David Chubko, head of the Department of Pediatric Surgery at Krasnoyarsk State Medical University.
First aid if a child has drunk a chemical:
- call an ambulance;
- rinse the mouth in large quantities;
- If the child drank acid, then he needs to be given a tablespoon of soda solution (2 teaspoons of tea soda per glass of water) every 5 minutes. Baking soda is an acid neutralizer;
- if the child drank an alkaline remedy, then it is necessary to gradually give cold water acidified with acetic or citric acid to drink (2 tablespoons of a 3% vinegar solution per glass of water).
What to do if a child swallows a small part or a button battery:
- immediately contact emergency services;
- in the case of a battery, do not allow your child to drink or eat until the x-ray determines the presence of a battery;
- If you have packaging from a toy, small items, batteries, or the device or toy itself, part of which was swallowed by a child, take them with you. This will help the doctor identify the item swallowed, the type of battery or small part, and its chemical composition.
Doctors remind you not to store small objects, parts, magnets and batteries within the reach of children. They can be swallowed by children and get stuck in the stomach.
