The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, will participate in the Saturday telephone conversation between the president of Ukraine and the leaders of European countries, the EC spokesman said. Earlier, Reuters reported that US President Donald Trump would also take part in the conversation.

The conversation will concern work on ending the Russian-Ukrainian war, including, above all, territorial issues and security guarantees for Ukraine. These topics are also to be discussed by the presidents of Ukraine and the USA during their meeting scheduled for Sunday. Volodymyr Zelensky and Donald Trump are scheduled to meet in Palm Beach, Florida, at 3 p.m. local time (9 p.m. in Poland).

“A lot may become clear before the New Year,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky wrote on Friday in the Telegram messenger, commenting on preparations for the meeting with President Trump. He also stated that the agreement was “almost ready.”

Also on Friday, in an interview with Axios, Zelensky said that the US has offered Ukraine security guarantees for 15 years, but Kiev would like to receive them for a longer period, including legal obligations to help in the event of another Russian aggression.

Arrangements regarding control over territories remain controversial issues in the ongoing negotiations: Russia demands the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from the previously unoccupied part of Donbas (mainly the Donetsk Oblast), while Kiev wants to freeze the front line in its current positions. The issue of control over the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant, occupied by Russian forces, is also still being discussed.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said that talks on ending the war had reached a “turning point”, although the version of the 20-point peace plan presented by Kiev differs from the one discussed by the US and Russian delegations. (PAP)
