Macron emphasized on Platform

Trump declared that the US needed the island for national security reasons. The day before, he appointed the Republican governor of Louisiana, Jeff Landry, as U.S. envoy for Greenland. He then stated that “Denmark does not spend any money, (Greenland – PAP) has no military protection”.

Since taking over again in January this year. office of president, Trump has repeatedly talked about the United States taking over Greenland. Other politicians of the Republican Party also spoke in a similar tone, including: Senator Tom Cruz of Texas, who argued in February that “the US and Denmark can no longer postpone the debate on the future of the island.”

– Greenland is located on the shortest flight route of intercontinental ballistic missiles from Russia and the Middle East towards the United States – Cruz said at the time. At the same time he assured that “taking over Greenland would not be the result of military force, but rather of diplomacy and common interestsin” and would take place “probably through a public referendum.”

Greenland has the status of an autonomous territory dependent on Denmark, which has controlled it since 1814.

From the second half of the 19th century, the United States raised the issue of Greenland's belonging several times, and after World War II, they were to make an offer to Denmark to buy the island. Reference was made to the takeover of Danish possessions in the Caribbean in 1917, which are now called the US Virgin Islands and have the status of a US dependent territory.

In response to statements by American politicians about Greenland, Denmark launched the “Let's buy California from Trump” initiative. Its goal is to raise a trillion dollars to buy out the American state.
