The British pound is the currency used in Great Britain and all its dependent territories, i.e. the British Antarctic Territory, the Falkland Islands, Gibraltar, Guernsey, the Isle of Man, Jersey, St. Helena, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands. It is considered to be the oldest currency in the world. It was first used in the 8th century. Then King Offa introduced a new monetary unit and called it the penny.
However, the pound sterling that we know today was introduced a little later. It was only in the 12th century that Henry II did it. Initially, the currency was exchanged mainly for silver, and over time it became an increasingly stronger means of payment. The first coins were put into circulation in the 15th century and were made of gold, and only at the end of the 17th century did the Bank of England print the first official banknotes.
In 1988, Margaret Thatcher's government linked the pound to the German mark, two years later the British currency was included in the ERM system with an exchange rate to the German mark of 2.90 marks per pound. In 1992, after the so-called On Black Wednesday, when George Soros launched a speculative attack on the pound, the currency left the system – in just a few days the value of the pound fell by 25%.
