The number of days with magnetic storms over the past 10 years has reached its maximum

December 25 13:59

2025 was a record year for geomagnetic activity over the past decade. The number of days with magnetic storms was the highest since 2016, and the total number of geomagnetically disturbed days was the highest since 2005.

As reported in the laboratory of solar astronomy IKI and ISTP, over the past 358 days of this year, magnetic storms were recorded 69 times. For comparison, in 2024 there were 44. The increase in the total number of days with geomagnetic disturbances is even more noticeable – there were 164, which is 75% more than last year.

Scientists call the main reason for this activity an unusually large number of coronal holes on the Sun, the massive formation of which began at the beginning of the year. These structures became the dominant factor in solar activity, eclipsing the flares.

Since there are no signs of a decrease in the number or size of coronal holes yet, at least the first months of 2026 are expected to continue this trend, and the frequency of magnetic storms will remain high.

The calmest year in the current century was 2009, when only 4 magnetic storms were recorded. The absolute record holder remains the year 2003 with 154 days of magnetic storms.
