According to Il Quotidiano d'Italia, the apprehension was carried out by agents of the Mobile Brigade in Naples, who located the fugitive in the Vesuvius area. The arrest took place on the basis of a European arrest warrant.
The operation is part of European judicial cooperation, and the man will be handed over to the Romanian authorities to serve his seven-year sentence for financial crimes.
His case also attracted attention due to his connections with the local political scene in Sibiu, especially through his wife, Adriana Elena Păcurar, known in the area. In 2024, the woman announced her candidacy in the local elections for Dumbrăveni City Hall, Sibiu.
Elena Păcurar also held the position of local councilor.
He managed to remain inconspicuous for several years, probably traveling through several countries, but the choice of the city of Pompeii as a refuge proved fatal due to the intense surveillance of law enforcement.
This episode once again underlines the fact that Italian territory is often used as a transit or hiding area by foreign fugitives, but also highlights the effectiveness of the control system of Italian law enforcement, the Italian publication adds.
