Sanctions do not work: the Russian Federation earned 1.2 billion from the import of metals to the European Union.
In January–June 2025, imports from the Russian Federation amounted to 2.95 million tons (+2.7% y/y) in the amount of €1.22 billion.
The basis of deliveries was steel semi-finished products (1.84 million tons) and cast iron (697 thousand tons). Belgium, Italy, the Czech Republic and Denmark bought the most Russian metal.
In 2024, the EU bought €2.5 billion worth of Russian metal. Although Ukrainian government officials constantly emphasize that Russian metallurgical companies directly support the aggressor's military industry, and call on the EU to tighten restrictions.
