MFA, travel warnings for Bulgaria: Traffic restrictions for vehicles carrying goods

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) informs Romanian citizens who are in, transiting or intend to travel to Bulgaria that, between December 24, 2025 and January 4, 2026, the movement of vehicles over 12 tons will be restricted on the Trakia and Struma highways, as well as on the Sofia-Dermantsi section of the Hemus highway. The measure does not apply to public passenger transport.

The Ministry transmits that, on December 30, 2025, the movement of heavy vehicles leaving Sofia will be suspended between 14:00 and 20:00.
On January 4, 2026, the movement of vehicles over 12 tons in the direction of Sofia will be suspended between 12:00 and 20:00.
“On the Hemus and Struma highways, traffic restrictions do not apply to vehicles over 12 tons transporting dangerous goods (ADR), live animals, perishable food products, as well as temperature-controlled goods.
On the Trakia highway, in the section from the Ihtiman substation (km 34) to the Vakarel substation (km 23), in the direction of travel towards Sofia, traffic restrictions do not apply to vehicles over 12 tons transporting dangerous goods (ADR)“, says the official statement.
According to the MAE, in the Blagoevgrad region, on December 24, 2025, between 10:00 and 20:00, reversible traffic will be introduced on the I-1/E-79 Sofia – Kulata road section, at the intersection with the Struma highway and the Simitli intersection. On the same date, two lanes will be provided in the direction of Kulata and one lane in the direction of Sofia.
