The countries are immersed in a diplomatic crisis, and although the parliament's move in Algiers is mainly symbolic, it also has a political meaning, notes “The Guardian”.

Parliament Speaker Ibrahim Bugali told national news agency APS that Wednesday's vote sent “a clear message, both internally and externally, that Algeria's national past cannot be erased and is not negotiable.”

Commenting on the decision of the parliament in Algiers, the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that it was an “openly hostile initiative, both to the will to resume the French-Algerian dialogue and to work calmly on issues of historical memory.”

“We continue to work towards resuming a demanding dialogue with Algeria that would respond to the priority interests of France and the French people, especially on security and migration issues,” the ministry in Paris added.
