The Minister of Finance, Alexandru Nazare, stated in a press briefing on Tuesday evening that the first consultations for the preparation of the 2026 budget will take place in January, when the approval calendar will also be announced.

“It is very important how we will lay the foundations of the budget for 2026. The first consultations for the preparation of the budget will begin in January. At that time we will also announce a calendar for approving the budget”, said Nazare, at the end of the government meeting.

In November, according to the minister, a budget deficit of 6.4% was recorded, compared to 7.15% in the corresponding month of the previous year.

“The budget execution for the month of November has not yet been published, but I can tell you that the deficit recorded in November is a deficit of 6.4, compared to the deficit recorded last year, of 7.15. We are talking about 121 billion, compared to 125, which were last year. Practically, the nominal deficit is lower in November by approximately 4 billion”, he added.

The finance minister said the deficit target for 2026 would be announced “when we have projected the budget, but it is known, and we have talked about it publicly, that it will be around the 6 figure, between 6% and 6.5%”.

“As we advance in the elaboration of the budget, we will know exactly what the final deficit figure for 2026 will be – anyway, within the limits we have already agreed with the Commission and are on the agreed fiscal-budgetary trajectory,” the official continued.

Asked if it is possible to relax some measures if the budget deficit situation looks good at the end of next year, Alexandru Nazare said: “I really want and I made special efforts so that in this ordinance we have such measures.”

“As we make savings and as we are able to reduce certain expenses, I hope we have such measures. I very much want to have such measures, but measures that do not endanger our very hard-earned fiscal-budgetary stability”, concluded the minister.
