The first serious winter episode of this season begins on Wednesday, December 24th, just before Christmas. According to ANM meteorologists, between December 24, 8 a.m. and December 25, 8 a.m., precipitation will cover most of Romania, and in many areas it will gradually turn into snow.

In Moldova and in the mountains, it will snow for most of the interval, and the snow layer will be deposited more consistently in the Southern and Curvature Carpathians, where amounts of water of 15–20 l/m2 can be collected.

In the rest of the country, it will rain at first, but towards the evening of Eve and on the night of December 24 to 25, the rain will gradually turn into sleet and snow, including in Transylvania, Muntenia, Oltenia and continental Dobrogea.

By Christmas, rainfall will begin to taper off. On the first day, the snow will be mostly in the mountain areas and in the southwest of the country, and on December 26 the weather will calm down. Atmospheric pressure will increase, the sky will gradually clear, and the appearance of the weather will be more pleasant.

In the east and south the weather will cool down significantly, with maximum temperatures falling below normal for the period, with negative values even during the day, especially at Christmas. Conversely, in the west and center, areas more protected from the cold air of the Carpathians, the maximums will be close to the usual values for this period, and in some places even slightly higher.

Strong wind and blowing snow

In addition to precipitation, another important element of the winter episode will be wind. It will intensify from December 24 and remain active until the evening of December 25, with gusts generally reaching 45–50 km/h, especially in southern and southeastern regions.

Due to the penetration of a wave of polar air, in the south of Moldova, but also in places in Muntenia and Oltenia, the snow could be blizzard, temporarily reducing visibility.

The weather in the capital

The change in weather will also be felt in Bucharest, where on Wednesday, December 24, the sky will be more cloudy, and temporary rains are expected throughout the day. At night, between December 24/25, precipitation will gradually turn into snow. The wind will blow moderately, with some intensification towards the end of the interval. The maximum temperature will rise to around 3 degrees Celsius, while the minimum will drop to -2 or -1 degree.

On Christmas Day, the weather will turn cold for this period: the sky will remain cloudy, light snow is possible in the early hours of the day, and the maximum temperature will not exceed -1 degree, with minimums dropping to -6 degrees Celsius.
