The “Galacticos” need victory to put pressure on Barcelona
The “blanco” formation is not going through the happiest period. Real Madrid are currently second in Spain, four lengths behind leaders Barcelona, and if they slip tonight, Xabi Alonso's side risk losing touch with the Catalan outfit.
The club's fluctuating form at the Santiago Bernabeu began at the start of November, when the Madrid side narrowly lost 0-1 to Liverpool at Anfield in the Champions League. From that moment until now, the “galacticos” have recorded only four more victories in the nine matches they have played in all competitions.
The latest success came in the middle of this week and was a hard-fought 3-2 win away to CF Talavera, a team in the third tier of Spanish football. That game represented a duel in the sixteenth finals of the King's Cup, and thus, “los blancos” got the tickets for the “eights” of the competition.
It was Kylian Mbappe who rescued Real Madrid from an embarrassing underperformance, scoring twice. Thus, the Frenchman reached 58 goals in the shirt of the “galacticos” in 2025, and if he manages to score tonight, Mbappe will equal (or even surpass) the record set by Cristiano Ronaldo in 2013 (59 goals in a calendar year for the “blanco” group).
Sevilla was eliminated from the King's Cup!
On the other hand, unlike today's opponent, the Andalusian club failed to make it to the last eight in the domestic cup.
The team at the Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pisjuan lost at the limit on the field of Deportivo Alaves, score 0-1, and thus, Matias Almeyda's students were prematurely eliminated from the competition.
In the championship, however, Sevilla can boast of a decisive success achieved in the last stage, 4-0 “at home” against the newly promoted Oviedo, a result that took tonight's guests to the 9th position in the ranking in Spain.
