Psychologist at the Krasnoyarsk Center for Promotion of Youth Projects “Vector” Yana Zakharova shared why the New Year's mood disappears and how to get it back. gornovosti.ru talked to a specialist about this topic.

The expert explains that the lack of pre-holiday mood is “a collective symptom of our time.” Previously, New Year was a common holiday: first in squares, then in large communal apartments with neighbors. Now these forms have disintegrated, and only an “empty shell” of responsibilities remains.

“We inherited the “family holiday” format, but lost the “family” – that expanded circle, the common street and the ethic of care. An empty shell remains: we need to celebrate, but it’s unclear how, with whom and why,” the psychologist emphasized.

Instead of joy, for many, the holiday causes burnout from the to-do list, disappointment and loneliness due to a narrow social circle. The key to change, according to the expert, is not to try to buy a “mood” in city shopping centers, but to consciously create new, simple traditions for your circle.

Yana Zakharova offers several ideas for such rituals:

  • Gratitude Hour: Gather with loved ones and honestly share the challenges of the past year and what you are grateful for.
  • “Letter to the future”: write letters of wishes with friends and open them together in a year.
  • “Dinner of a Story”: at the festive table, let everyone tell the brightest story of the year.

The psychologist also advises focusing on simple sensations: your favorite winter smells, the crunch of snow, sparklers. Sometimes the meaning returns when the holiday is shared with those who find it especially difficult.
