A soft, fluffy and spotless white towel is the hallmark of a good hotel. But at home, even high-quality towels become stiff over time, lose color and begin to absorb moisture poorly.
The main enemies of whiteness and softness are hard water and detergent residues. Salts from the water accumulate in the fibers, making the fabric rough and gray. Particles of powder and conditioner clog the terry, forming a film that reduces absorbency and adds rigidity. Doing laundry at home often makes these problems worse.
Experienced maids recommend using a professional three-step method, which does not mask the problem, but completely solves it.
1. Soaking in vinegar
Before the main wash, soak the towels in hot water (50-60°C) with the addition of 200-250 ml of 9% table vinegar for 30-60 minutes.
Vinegar dissolves mineral deposits from hard water, breaks down detergent and grease residues, disinfects and removes musty odors, and restores the natural absorbency of fibers.
Don't be afraid of the smell; with further washing it will completely disappear.
2. Washing with soda
After soaking, place the towels in the washing machine. Instead of powder, add 100-150 g of baking soda. Soda completely softens the water, preventing new plaque formation, effectively neutralizes any odors, makes the fabric soft and washes away vinegar residues.
Wash at 60°C. For very gray towels, you can add 1-2 tbsp. hydrogen peroxide (3%) as a mild bleach.
3. Proper drying
- Immediately after washing, shake each towel well to loosen the fibers.
- It is ideal to use the tumble dryer on medium setting. Warm air will give the terry that same “hotel” volume.
- If air drying, choose a well-ventilated place (balcony, street). Don't leave wet towels in the bathroom – this will cause a damp smell.
- Shake them periodically during the drying process.
With this method you get snow-white, hygroscopic and delicate towels that give you a feeling of everyday little luxury.
Try this cycle with one old towel and the difference will be obvious after the first procedure. Sometimes the secret of impeccable service and home comfort lies not in expensive products, but in a wise combination of simple ingredients.
