EU countries decided on Monday to suspend imports of Russian LNG until the end of this year and gas supplied via pipelines until September 30, 2027.
The Slovak Prime Minister described the decision as “stupid”, “ideological” and called the “energy suicide of the Union”. Fico expressed dissatisfaction with the fact that the decision was taken by a qualified majority and not unanimously.
– We will break our legs in a hurry to establish trade relations with Russia – added the Prime Minister.

Slovakia and Hungary together against the EU. There will be a lawsuit
Slovakia and Hungary will submit separate lawsuits to the CJEU (as the Prime Minister emphasized, filing a joint lawsuit is not possible), but the actions of both countries will be coordinated.
European Commission spokeswoman Anna-Kaisa Itkonen announced on Tuesday that member states have the right to challenge EU regulations to the CJEU, but the EC will defend the EU's decision to abandon Russian gas before the tribunal.
Gas from Russia is 30 percent. deliveries to Slovakia
Currently, Russian gas accounts for approximately 30 percent. supplies of this raw material to Slovakia. The authorities in Bratislava warn that failure to comply with the agreement with Gazprom, valid until 2034, may result in a fine of up to $16 billion.
Currently, gas from Russia reaches Slovakia via Turkey and other countries, but the capacity of these connections is limited. Previously, Slovakia imported gas through Ukraine, but two years ago Kiev did not extend the transit agreement with Russia.
The EU attacks Russian gas. What will change?
The European Council adopted regulations on ending the import of Russian gas. The decision was made during the meeting held on January 26. The Ministry of Energy emphasizes that Poland actively participated in the talks, striving to distance the Community from Russian raw materials.
The first restrictions on the import of Russian gas will come into force in 2026. Six weeks after the regulation enters into force, a ban on gas imports to the European Union will be introduced.
In 2027, a total ban on the import of LNG will come into force, and from the autumn of pipeline gas. In November 2027, the European Union will completely end the import of Russian gas.
