The invisible danger in the intestines that doesn't hurt, but can be fatal. Surgeon: “It's like a foreboding ticking, hoping it won't be followed by an explosion”

Intestinal polyps, small growths that develop in the colon, represent a hidden danger, warns surgeon Constantin Truș, from Galati County Hospital. They don't cause pain or bother initially, but over time, most colon cancers originate in a benign polyp that transforms.

“In the human body, some alarms are loud and immediate. Others, however, operate in complete silence: polyps developed in the intestine (colon). These are discrete growths that do not hurt or disturb… initially. It is this prolonged silence that hides the major risk: over time, most colon cancers originate in a benign polyp that turns into”, explains Dr. Constantin Truș.

The doctor claims to have operated on patients who had no symptoms before diagnosis.

“Underneath this appearance of calm, the polyp was growing, slowly and surely, following a cellular logic of its own that unfortunately took it in the wrong direction. Waiting for or ignoring a polyp is like ignoring an ominous ticking, hoping it won't be followed by an explosion.”adds the specialist.

Colonoscopy – the only prevention strategy

According to the doctor, the only effective method to detect this danger in time is colonoscopy, especially recommended for people over 50 years old.

“I can already hear part of the audience saying: . Well, I'm going to sound the alarm until this message reaches everyone. My dears, I see its effects every day … are not pleasant. If I'm being annoying with this warning, please don't be mad at me, I'm doing it for your own good“, says Dr. Truș.

Colonoscopy is not only an investigation, but often becomes a preventive action. “It allows us to intervene precisely: to find the polyp and remove it completely (polypectomy) in a phase where major surgery not yet necessary”the doctor explains.

Dr. Truș points out that you should not wait for the symptoms, because they only appear when the problem is already advanced.

“Don't wait for the little detail to force a change in destiny. Don't wait for the symptoms, because when they appear, the silence has already been broken by a much more serious problem. If you are already 50 years old, screening is already recommended. Do it while it still protects you. Take care of yourselves! Take care of your loved ones!”concludes Constantin Truș.
