Folk calendar
Soykin day
On this day, the jay was honored – a small bird with bright plumage, a wide crest on its head and a long tail.
In Rus' in the old days they said that if on its day a jay flies to the window and starts screaming, then this is a good sign. A wise person, having heard such a signal, will leave the house and follow the bird. It was believed that the jay could show the way to happiness.
The jay was popularly called the soothsayer. People believed that this bird had small mirrors on its wings in which they could see their future.
It was possible to find out what awaits you that day without the help of a jay bird. The peasants approached the well and listened to the water: if a tinkling sound was heard, they could expect profit, but if there was silence, they should not count on success.
Also on Soykin day they used coins to tell fortunes. To do this, they threw a handful of coins into the nearest snowdrift, and then took them out one by one. If the largest of the thrown coins came across first, one could count on good luck in business, and if the smallest one, on the contrary, there was no need to wait for income.
