The head of the National Security Bureau, Sławomir Cenckiewicz, said on Wednesday that Poland must “suspend” compulsory military service and “start talking about the threats directly.” He stressed that more time should be devoted to training the public and building places of protection for civilians.

Cenckiewicz was asked on RMF FM whether now is a good time to restore compulsory military service and conscription, which was suspended in 2010 in order to professionalize the army.
– This is a good opportunity for those who suspended him to hang him up – said the head of the National Security Bureau. According to him, suspending compulsory military service is part of a broader plan and idea. – We must start talking about threats directly, also by preparing society for these threats – he emphasized.
– We must suspend compulsory military service, we must devote more time to training the public and to building alternative places to protect the civilian population.we must build alternative places to peace, for hospitals and for carrying out operations during hostilities – said Cenckiewicz.
As he stated, President Karol Nawrocki will be happy to sign all laws that would push these issues forward.
The head of the National Security Bureau was also asked if and when – in his opinion – “there will be a war”.
Cenckiewicz referred in this context to the words of Prime Minister Donald Tusk on July 25 after his meeting with American General Alexus Grynkewich, commander of NATO troops in Europe. Tusk then said that General Grynkewich confirmed American expertise that Russia would be ready to confront Europe already in 2027. – There is no reason for us to scare each other, but we must be really vigilant and focused – Tusk emphasized then.
– It is not my role to scare people here, I am referring to the Prime Minister's statement – said Cenckiewicz. The editor-in-chief emphasized that he did not want the head of the National Security Bureau to scare people, but “is he afraid?” – Yes, I'm afraid – replied the head of the National Security Bureau.
Moreover, according to Cenckiewicz, Europe has “virtually no capabilities” to defend itself against Russia.
As he said, looking at the current situation related to the war in Ukraine, “The Russians are on the offensive.” He added that – in his opinion – Russians do not want peace. (PAP)
