What did General Kowalski say about the war in Ukraine?
— This is an important visit that comes a few days after the publication of the US National Security Strategy. We are the first European delegation to have the opportunity to talk about the details and intentions behind this document. These were very good conversations that show that Americans are open to expanding security cooperation with Poland on a bilateral basis – Nikodem Rachoń, advisor to the head of the National Security Bureau, told the Polish media.
“A document that shows the US perspective”
The deputy head of the National Security Bureau emphasized at the briefing that the National Security Strategy is “a very important document that shows the US perspective” on various threats. As he said, the talks in Washington are intended to help better understand “the accents that Americans are currently placing in the world.”
– So that, as a country that is a strategic partner for the USA, we can better design our strategic documents, in which we certainly need to build references to how our strategic ally perceives threats and opportunities in the modern world – added the general.
The Polish delegation learned the details
As General Kowalski said, the delegation could “ask about certain details that cannot be discussed or described in the document, which are still somehow covered with a veil of secrecy and which will later be found in various decisions or even moves made by the current American administration.” He added that this applies in particular to the issue of deploying the United States armed forces in various parts of the world, “but also in general maintaining certain capabilities of military presence and maintaining functions, mainly the deterrence function in particularly inflammatory regions.”
He noted that the document does not pay much attention to the war in Ukraine, “which may be interpreted as some kind of disregard or perhaps considering this topic as unimportant”, but in his opinion such an interpretation is incorrect.
He emphasized that the American authorities want to try to end the fighting in Ukraine, to a ceasefire, perhaps then negotiating a peace agreement. – It is not as some commentators are trying to suggest that the Americans currently want to force a quick end to the conflict, in the sense of a quick signing of peace agreements – he added, assessing that “the Americans realize that this is a very long and complicated process.”
The US authorities and peace in Ukraine
According to him, the US would like to stop the hostilities because they believe that the prospect of their continuation does not lead to any good scenario. — The problems we are currently seeing will only get worse. And, what's more, it may also strengthen, contrary to appearances, a kind of coalition of evil that is currently heading for a serious crisis in the world, he added.
– From our perspective, the most important thing is that this is a solution that will not result in the regrouping of forces and the start of a new conflict within the next year or two – said the deputy head of the National Security Bureau.
Charles McLaughlin also attended the meeting and discussed next year's G20 summit. Rachoń said that the head of the International Policy Office of the President of the Republic of Poland Marcin Przydacz will visit Washington on December 15-16.
He noted that Przydacz will play an important role in the preparations for the G20 summit in Florida as a representative of President Karol Nawrocki. He also emphasized that inviting Poland to the G20 summit is a gesture that proves that “Washington recognizes Poland's growing role and its growing economic potential.”
