Cristian Tudor Popescu claims that the perception that President Nicușor Dan created when he said that “people who vote for AUR are neither extremists nor pro-Russian” was one of “validation of AUR”. The journalist criticized the statement made by the head of state in the interview given to the French publication Le Monde, which he later clarified in a press conference in Paris, stating that he actually said that not all the electorate of the party led by George Simion is like that.

Asked on Tuesday night on B1 TV what he thought of Nicușor Dan's statement, Cristian Tudor Popescu said: “Well, the president didn't want to calculate or he calculated, but he didn't take into account, that's what he wanted, how to convey such a message in public opinion, both French and Romanian.

“Well, if the electorate, those who vote for AUR, are neither extremists nor pro-Russian, then AUR, the party, by way of consequence, is neither extremist nor pro-Russian. That's what the AUR voters understood, breathing a sigh of relief. That's what the French understood even more, that they can't see the nuances. It's normal that you extrapolate, because Mr. Nicușor Dan didn't say anything about the AUR party. He said about voters, but the extension is immediately made, “good, so it's a fine party AUR, it's neither extremist nor pro-Russian”, the journalist continued.

He claims that “there is ample evidence, among prominent AUR members, who are pro-Russian and extremist.”

“Practically, in Romania, this is a validation of AUR. He realized now, after first producing that saying, now he realized and said, no, however, they are among AUR voters and pro-Russian, and extremists (…). Initially he did not say that. He said that much, they are not extremists and they are not pro-Russian, they are dissatisfied with all other parties. Now, basically, it is an invitation to enter the government for AUR. This was transmitted in public opinion, in mass, it was transmitted, “GOLD is fine, sir, the president also said, sir”, Cristian Tudor Popescu also declared.
