The bathhouse is traditionally considered a symbol of health and longevity, a place for cleansing the body and soul. However, this ritual, beneficial in many ways, can become a serious threat for people with certain diseases and conditions.
The famous bathhouse attendant, herbalist and founder of the School of Bathing Skills Vasily Lyakhov on the pages of sportkp.ru (18+) explained in which cases one should resolutely refuse to visit the steam room.
When the bathhouse is prohibited
The specialist identified a number of absolute contraindications in which heat stress can lead to serious consequences.
Acute conditions and inflammation
“The first and main rule is that if you have an elevated body temperature or any acute inflammatory or infectious processes, you cannot go to the bathhouse. The body is already fighting the disease, and additional stress on the cardiovascular system will only worsen the condition,” notes Lyakhov.
Serious chronic diseases in the acute stage
Going to the steam room is especially dangerous during an exacerbation of a peptic ulcer of the stomach or duodenum. Heat can cause internal bleeding.
The same applies to the postoperative period, when tissue is actively healing – the risk of bleeding and suture dehiscence is extremely high.
High risk of blood clots
If there is a history of thrombosis, thrombophlebitis, or a tendency to increased blood clotting is diagnosed, the bathhouse poses a direct danger. Heat and steam cause blood vessels to dilate, which can lead to the separation of an existing blood clot.
People with varicose veins associated with blood clots must first undergo treatment and normalize their blood condition, and only then, with the permission of a doctor, can they carefully consider a bath.
Mental and neurological disorders
For diseases such as epilepsy, the bath is strictly prohibited. “Any emergency situation – be it heatstroke or an attack – in conditions of high temperature and limited space can lead to serious injury: a burn from a stove, a fall,” the expert warns.
State of alcoholic intoxication
This is a taboo that many people know about, but often ignore. Alcohol in combination with high temperature puts a terrible strain on the heart and blood vessels, greatly increasing the risk of heart attack, stroke and loss of consciousness.
Lyakhov also draws attention to conditions when the decision to visit the bathhouse requires an individual approach and consultation with a doctor.
Menstruation
The specialist advises to refrain from using the steam room during the most active period of the menstrual cycle, so as not to provoke increased bleeding. Before and after this period, visiting is possible, but without extreme temperature loads.
Pregnancy
The question is strictly individual. During pregnancy, the cardiovascular system already works under increased stress, and sudden changes in temperature can cause complications. It is imperative to consult a gynecologist.
Hypertension and ischemic heart disease
People with unstable blood pressure and coronary heart disease need to be extremely careful about thermal procedures. Only short-term visits to the steam room are possible at moderate temperatures and after agreement with the cardiologist.
Vasily Lyakhov reminds us that the bathhouse is, first of all, a powerful therapeutic procedure, and not a harmless relaxation. It creates conditions of controlled stress for the body.
Therefore, if there is any doubt, especially in the presence of chronic diagnoses, the first visit after an illness or at a new age should begin not with the steam room, but with the attending physician’s office. Take care of your health and approach traditions wisely.
Important: This information is not a substitute for consulting a doctor. The body's response to changes in diet/training may depend on individual physiology, genetic predisposition and health status. It is recommended to consult a specialist.
