Ukrainian army chief announces steps to strengthen Ukrainian army amid accelerated Russian offensive
Ukraine will focus on strengthening its military through better mobilization, recruitment and high-quality training as it continues to try to resist Russia's full-scale invasion, Ukrainian army chief Oleksandr Sîrski said Monday following a recent meeting with military personnel, the Kyiv Independent reports.
The moves come amid intense scrutiny of Ukraine's military leadership amid the ongoing Russian offensive, as the country also faces mobilization issues and an acute shortage of frontline personnel as it approaches its fourth year of full-scale war.
“The enemy continues to advance, so we have no choice but to strengthen our defenses and military to continue to repel Russia's large-scale aggression”Sîrski wrote on Facebook.
The new efforts are aimed at overhauling military training by improving both the structure and conditions of military training.
Among the key changes, the army is extending the duration of Basic General Military Training (BGMT) to 51 days and introducing specialized training and an adaptation period within combat units.
Additional measures include improving the selection and training of instructors, modernizing the infrastructure of training centers and providing psychological and tactical support to facilitate the adaptation of newly mobilized personnel.
An audit of Ukraine's training centers has identified top facilities that will serve as benchmarks for other establishments. To increase safety and ensure consistent training, the military is moving its training programs away from frontline areas, deploying army corps to training grounds in central and western Ukraine.
The head of the Ukrainian army also called for urgent improvements to the protection infrastructure, citing unsatisfactory conditions in some training centers.
“We have no right to be careless about the safety of our servicemen. We have issued the necessary orders to address the issues identified,” Sîrski pointed out.
