The Court of Appeal in Katowice decided on Tuesday that Henryk Kania – the suspect, among others, for multi-million fraud, the former owner of Zakłady Mięsne Kania residing in Argentina – will receive a letter of safe conduct provided that a property guarantee in the amount of PLN 20 million is paid on his behalf.

The SA considered the complaints of the prosecutor's office and Kania's defense lawyers (he agreed to provide his full name – PAP) against the earlier decision of the district court, which set a surety of PLN 8 million. The appellate court increased this amount to PLN 20 million.

After the meeting, prosecutor Sebastian Głuch from the Silesian department of the National Prosecutor's Office and the suspect's defense attorney informed the journalists about the content of the SA's decision. The court set the deadline for payment of the surety as June 30. Kania's lawyers repeated that their client is unable to raise such an amount.

Kania's defenders submitted an application for the issuance of a safe conduct in April this year. Such a document would guarantee the suspect that after returning to Poland, he could appear in court freely until a final judgment is issued. (PAP)
