In an important Group I match of the Women's Handball World Championship, Hungary were seriously challenged by Japan and it took a spectacular comeback to the match to end in a tie, 26-26a result that qualified the Hungarians in the quarter-finals, for the first time in 12 years.
The goalkeeper made a significant contribution not only in the match against Japan, but also during Hungary's World Championship Zsofi Szemerey from Gyor. In the duel with the Japanese, she had some parries at key moments that prevented her opponents from decisively pulling away.
Zsofi Szemerey, before the duel with Denmark: “Maybe we will recover the lost point”
At the end of the game, Szemerey spoke about her performance and praised her teammates for coming back from -6 down.
“I'm glad we got that double save at the end, I tried to support the girls as best I could from the goal, but that's not what I want to talk about because the comeback in the last few minutes was a great team effort. I'm proud of the girls for coming back from a six-goal deficit.
I started very low, felt the team a little sleepy and hit the right revs quite late. The extra only came when I felt the house was on fire. I'm sorry that we lost a point, although we should look at this result as a point won – and we have to build on it,” said the goalkeeper, according to nemzetisport.hu.
Szemerey then referred to Wednesday's win against Romania, score 34-29and stated that a similar attitude could ensure them a big result in the confrontation with Denmark, from the first group of the World Cup.
“We are still experiencing this match with some sadness, because we did not expect this, this is not what we prepared for. We have to see the full side of the glass: we have achieved the first goal in the main group, and if we approach the game against Denmark with the same enthusiasm as against Romania, maybe we will not only cause them problems, but we can recover the point lost now and show that we have to be taken seriously“, concluded the 31-year-old handball player.

Anna Albek: “We don't want to suffer a bad defeat against Denmark”
Nikoletta Papp drew, in turn, the conclusions after the tie with Japan:
“We came back in an almost impossible situation, time was against us because of the score. We fought a lot at the end. Although it may not be visible, we can enjoy this point, because the second half did not look like we were going to get anything. However, we have to process what happened, because we are still under the influence of emotions.”
Last but not least, Anna Albek prefaced the confrontation with Denmark, but was not as optimistic as Szemerey:
“The next match will be important again. We don't want to suffer a nasty defeat against Denmark; we will play for victory, regardless of the fact that we have already secured qualification.”
