The draw for the groups for the 2026 World Championship took place on Friday evening, and Romania already knows the scenario it would end up in if it passes the barrier. The national team of Mircea Lucescu (80 years old) will play in Group D, along with the USA, Australia and Paraguay, a group considered accessible.

Shortly after the announcement of the groups, the possible opponents of the “tricolors” reacted on social networks.

  • US:

In order to reach the World Championship, Romania has to pass a complicated barrier:

  • Turkey – Romania, away, on March 26, 2026

  • If qualified, play-off final, also away, against Slovakia or Kosovo, on 31 March 2026

Key facts about WC 2026

The 2026 World Championship will take place in the USA, Mexico and Canada, from June 11 to July 19, 2026. It will be the first edition with 48 teams, divided into 12 groups of 4 teams each. The first two places in each group qualify, along with the best 8 teams in third place. In total, 104 matches will be played over 38 days, making the tournament the longest in history.
