Education Minister Daniel David said on Wednesday that “we will lose competitive advantages” if teachers don't start using artificial intelligence in school and “we don't teach kids how to use it”.

“I'm afraid that if we don't start using, as teachers, artificial intelligence, we don't teach children how to use it, we will again lose competitive advantages, but at the same time we can't bet everything on artificial intelligence, because a lot of other educational and psychological problems start to appear after that,” said Daniel David to Digi24.

He said he had “visited a lot of schools” this year and asked the students he met “if they use artificial intelligence, what systems do they use”.

“A lot of people told me, yes, they use it, and I asked them, but do you know, for example, what does hallucination mean? Do you know, for example, what is the illusion that the artificial intelligence system has? They didn't know, so they basically took the answers, let's say, that I don't know which chatbot gave them, but nobody taught them that, be careful, that information has to be verified, even if it is given by an artificial intelligence system. There are things like that that we must gradually bring them into the curriculum, in the interaction we have with the teachers”, added the Minister of Education.

The official noted that “there are a lot of artificial intelligence projects, many, dozens, I think, that we have going on in schools and universities.”

“We have, for example, in the new curriculum at the high school level, the technology component encouraged as a transversal method of teaching for various subjects (…). When I met with principals, from hundreds of schools, I had meetings when I discussed with them, for example, about this competition context for principals, for next year, I always brought this up and they are also aware that they have to bring technology into the school, but often they are afraid. And I told them that they have to carried away, but at the same time ensuring the safety of the children, but we must not avoid it, because we lose competitive advantages”, concluded Daniel David.
