Roskomnadzor began to restrict the FaceTime calling service

4 December 15:42

Roskomnadzor began to restrict the operation of the FaceTime service, which is used by owners of Apple equipment for video calls. As the department's press service told Gazeta.Ru, the service, like other foreign instant messengers, is allegedly used to organize terrorist attacks, recruitment and fraudulent schemes.

Russian users began complaining about problems with FaceTime in October, although there were no official statements on this matter. Now information about the restrictions has been confirmed.

Let us remind you that Roskomnadzor began blocking calls in instant messengers back in August. This primarily concerned WhatsApp* and Telegram. The measures are explained by the fight against criminals. Chairman of the Duma Committee on Information Policy Sergei Boyarsky argued that limiting calls led to a decrease in fraud cases.

At the end of November, the regulator began a phased blocking of WhatsApp* itself in Russia. The Ministry of Digital Development stated that access to calls could be restored if the platforms comply with Russian legislation.

*Meta, which owns WhatsApp, is recognized as an extremist organization in Russia and is banned.
