Introduction
On this day, the Orthodox Church celebrates the great twelfth holiday – the Entry into the Temple of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
The Feast of the Introduction was established at the dawn of Christianity. In Orthodoxy it became widespread in the 9th century. The Russian people shortened the full name of the church holiday to the first word – “introduction” – associating it not so much with the Mother of God, but with the concept of the beginning – in this case, the beginning of real winter. “Introduction has come and brought winter,” people said.
They believed that on this day Winter herself was riding through the streets – in a snow-white fur coat, on three horses. With her breath she freezes the air and draws snow patterns on the windows. Frost and sun on this day were considered a good sign: it meant a good harvest of bread next summer. “It’s a strong winter – prepare your bins,” that’s what they said about this. If the weather was cloudy and warm, there was no hope for a fertile year.
The Introduction was also used to judge the upcoming weather – especially that expected for the upcoming holidays. According to signs, if this day turns out to be frosty, then all Christmas days will be cold.
From this day on, winter trading began – Vvedensky fairs. Their main product was traditionally sleighs. Test drives of winter transport were also carried out on Vvedenye. The festivities usually started with the newlyweds, who were seated in a painted sleigh. The horses were driven by a young man, belted with a bright sash; the young wife also dressed up in her best clothes
