Folk calendar

Day of Proclus

The holiday was named in honor of Saint Proclus, who served as archbishop of Constantinople in the 5th century.

“Curse evil spirits on Proclus,” people in Rus' taught. This had to be done so that evil forces would not come out from under the ground, where they were hiding from the frost, and cause harm.

By this time, the winter sled road was finally installed. “Until Proclus, don’t expect any use from the road,” they said in Rus'.

On this day we watched the weather. It was believed that if snow falls on December 3, then June 3 will also be rainy. Sometimes the weather on that day was used to judge the entire month of June. If a bullfinch sang on Proclus, and a magpie hid under the eaves (under the roof), this foreshadowed an imminent blizzard.
