Many teachers are concerned about the smaller paychecks currently hitting their accounts. It turns out that the reason is the second tax threshold, which more than one third of them fell into – reports Next.gazeta.pl.

People whose income does not exceed PLN 120,000. PLN for a given year, 12% applies. tax rate. However, if they earn more, they are subject to a second threshold of 32%. However, this rate applies only to the amount exceeding it, i.e. not to the entire remuneration, but only to the surplus achieved. Meanwhile, it turns out that over 30 percent teachers have just fallen into the second tax bracket, and the result is a lower payment amount.
As wages increase, so do taxes
According to Henryk Kiepura, Secretary of State at the Ministry of National Education, quoted by Next.gazeta.pl, further teacher salary increases have been implemented since last year.
– The largest salary increase in 2024 in the amount of 30%. and 33 percent allowed to restore the appropriate level of wages for this professional group in relation to macroeconomic indicators. However, in 2025, wages increased by another 5%. – says Henryk Kiepura. – Taking into account the solutions included in the draft budget act for 2026, after their implementation, the remuneration of beginning teachers will be 44% higher compared to 2023, and the remuneration of appointed and certified teachers will be 41% higher.
Big material advancement for teachers?
According to a representative of the Ministry of National Education, according to the estimated data of the educational information system regarding teachers' salaries, threshold 120 thousand PLN in 2024 exceeded 36.17%. all teachers: :
- 3.1 percent beginners,
- 11.74 appointed,
- 55.69 percent certified.
According to Henryk Kiepura, this means a great material advancement for teachers as a professional group.
Teachers won't want overtime?
Meanwhile teachers are not satisfied with the level of tax brackets.
– We are aware that these thresholds have been set at the same, very low level for a long time. In the meantime, there was high inflation, salaries were rising, and the thresholds remained the same – says Urszula Woźniak, vice-president of the Polish Teachers' Union, quoted by Next.gazeta.pl.
According to the ZNP representative, this concerns 13 salaries a year of PLN 9,000 each. PLN gross per month.
– So these are not high salaries. Full-time teachers would most likely not exceed this threshold of 120,000. PLN gross per year. However, they save the education system and also work 1.5-time and 2-time jobs. This also applies to directors who have functional allowances and exceed this threshold, says Urszula Woźniak. – Of course, no one will raise the threshold only for teachers, but it should be done. It is possible that teachers will not want to take overtime hours and who will teach then? – the vice-president of the ZNP is concerned.
