The National Administration of Romanian Waters announced on Sunday that the water level in the Paltinu reservoir has increased by approximately 12 meters, and “the high turbidity values do not allow the proper treatment of the water for potability”.
“At this moment, in the Paltinu reservoir, the water level has risen from elevation 609 to elevation 621, i.e. approximately 12 meters, accumulating a volume of over 10 million cubic meters of water (i.e. 2-3 times more than the volume that accumulates in the case of monthly multi-year flows),” the institution declared, on Sunday, in a post on Facebook.
The Romanian Waters Administration specified that, “at this time, discharge downstream can only be done through the hydroelectric plant, with values of a maximum of 2-3 mc/s”.
“However, due to the high turbidity, the power plants were shut down for several hours due to the risk of overheating. Under these conditions, the high turbidity values do not allow the proper treatment of water for potable use,” the statement added.
Appeal to the county authorities
The Romanian Water Administration resumed “the recommendation to DSP Prahova and other authorities in the county to supply water for household purposes for the affected localities, considering the current critical situation”.
“We request the declaration of a state of emergency in order to implement measures to support the affected communities. It is estimated, based on the data from this moment, that the resumption of drinking water supply will be possible after a minimum of 72 hours from the end of the precipitation, provided that the turbidity decreases to the levels that allow water treatment in the Voila Treatment Plant”, the institution also declared.
Drinking water supply, stopped in several localities in Prague
The supply is stopped in the localities of Câmpina, Breaza, Băicoi, Adunati, Poiana Câmpina, Şotrile, Băneşti, Brebu, Telega, Vărbilău, Aluniş and partially in Floreşti commune in Prahova county, the situation having a direct impact on tens of thousands of people.
The problem led to the suspension of hospitalizations in the Câmpina Municipal Hospital, except for major emergencies, because the unit can no longer sterilize surgical instruments or materials for small children, according to the announcement made by the medical director of the health unit, quoted by News.ro.
