Folk calendar
Grigory Winter Pointer
On this day, the memory of St. Gregory the Wonderworker, who lived in the 3rd century in Asia Minor, is celebrated.
In Rus', as usual, they “rolled up winter” on Gregory – they tumbled through the fresh snow, praising the sun. Everyone did this, both old and young. The further we managed to roll, the stronger and harsher the winter should have been, but the more successful the next year. People said: “Roll like a wheel from the last month of autumn – to harsh weather, to severe frost, to strong life.”
The low temperature that day also indicated the approaching cold weather. They noted: “Like Gregory, so is winter.” They also looked at the ice on the river: if it was dark, it foreshadowed a good harvest next summer.
