Monsoon rains, exacerbated by tropical storms, caused some of the worst flooding the region has faced in years, affecting millions of people in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Sri Lanka. Around 600 people died, writes the BBC.
Heavy rains began on the Indonesian island of Sumatra on Wednesday. “During the flood, everything went away,” a resident of Bireuen, Sumatra's Aceh province, told Reuters. “I wanted to save my clothes, but my house collapsed,” he said.
Hundreds of people are still missing. Thousands of people are stranded, and some of them are waiting to be rescued from rooftops.
According to the toll updated on Saturday, more than 300 people died in Indonesia, and 160 died in Thailand. Deaths were also reported in Malaysia.
In Sri Lanka, which was hit by Cyclone Ditwah, more than 130 people have died and about 170 others are missing, officials said.
10 Indonesian provinces affected by floods
An exceptionally rare tropical cyclone, called Senyar, caused landslides and catastrophic flooding in Indonesia.
The national disaster management agency said on Saturday that nearly 300 people were still missing after floods ravaged Sumatra.
“The current was very fast, in a few seconds it reached the streets, it entered the houses,” Arini Amalia, a resident of Aceh province, told the BBC.

Bad weather has hampered rescue operations, and although tens of thousands of people have been evacuated, hundreds are still stranded, Indonesia's disaster management agency said.
In Songkhla, a province in southern Thailand, water levels rose up to 3 meters in one of the worst floods in a decade. At least 145 people died.
More than 160 people have died in the 10 provinces affected by the floods, the government announced on Saturday. More than 3.8 million people were affected by the floods.
Problems in other countries in the region as well
In neighboring Malaysia, the death toll is much lower, but the damage is also devastating. Flooding left parts of northern Perlis state under water, killing two people and forcing tens of thousands into shelters.
Sri Lanka is also facing one of the worst weather disasters in recent years, and the government has declared a state of emergency.
More than 15,000 homes were destroyed and about 78,000 people were forced to move into temporary shelters, officials said. A third of the country was left without electricity or running water, they also stated.
