The President of the Senate, the liberal Mircea Abrudean, declared on Friday that the reform of magistrates' pensions is “awaited by Romanians” and “the time has come for it to be assumed, understood and put into practice”.

The draft law was adopted by the Government on Friday, and Prime Minister Bolojan will go to the Parliament next Tuesday for the appointment of responsibility.

“The Senate is prepared to hold the Government responsible for the project of magistrates' pensions next week. If Romania, with the participation of all its institutions, succeeds in having a law on magistrates' pensions promulgated by the end of the year, the money from the PNRR can be saved,” Mircea Abrudean said, Friday evening, in a post on Facebook.

He added that the prime minister “went ahead with this reform, requested and expected by Romanians, to eliminate some social inequities”.

“The time has come for it to be assumed, understood and put into practice,” concluded the president of the Senate.

Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan will engage the Government's responsibility on the project on magistrates' pensions, on Tuesday, in the Parliament. Lawmakers can file amendments until 8 a.m. Tuesday, according to the scheduled schedule.

A milestone of 231 million euros

The reform of magistrates' pensions is one of the reforms that Romania has pledged to implement through the National Recovery and Resilience Plan. The deadline for meeting the milestone – worth 231 million euros – was November 28, so it will not be able to be met.

When asked about plan B so that Romania does not lose the money, the spokeswoman for the Government declared: “Next is the two months of evaluation of the fulfillment of the benchmarks and criteria that will be communicated tomorrow by the Ministry of European Funds”.

“Perhaps, during the evaluation, the law will enter into force. It will be a process of negotiation, of discussions with the European Commission”, Ioana Dogioiu also said, at the end of the Government meeting on Thursday morning.
