Folk calendar

Guryev day. Old style date: November 15.

On this day, the memory of three Christian martyrs is celebrated – Guria, Samon and Aviv, who lived in the 3-4 centuries.

People believed that Gury helps treat dental diseases. On this day, it was customary to address the saint with an appropriate prayer. They also said that in Guria “winter comes on a piebald mare and drives away all the unclean.” They also believed that evil spirits are afraid of winter, so they run away from the earth and leave people alone until Christmas time.

A person born on this day was supposed to be given a measure of oats or a load of hay. It was believed that this would give health to the horses. In Guria, people generally paid a lot of attention to these animals: “Gurian without a horse is like winter without January.” There was even a special sign: “If the horses neigh on Guria, it’s good.”

We also looked at weather signs. They said that if snow falls on Guria, it will remain there until the flood.

From this day begins the 40-day Nativity Fast, also called Filippov.
